PROGRAMMES OFFERED WITH ADMISSION
REQUIREMENTS
(a) DIPLOMA
IN MASS COMMUNICATION is a 2-year Part-time Programme in the School of
Continuing Education offering academic and practical training to practicing
journalists and other qualified persons who desire to improve on their job
performance.
Admission Requirements: Five credit
passes at one sitting or six credits at two sittings. The credit passes should
include English Language, Literature in English, and a Pass (P7) in Mathematics
in the National Examination Council (NECO) and or the West African Senior
Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
(b) BACHELOR
OF ARTS (B. A) IN COMMUNICATION ARTS is a 3-or 4-year Full-time, and a 5-year
Part-time programmes that give our graduates a broad exposure in aspects of
human communication, mass communication, and the communication arts.
Admission Requirements:
1 i)
Candidates for the 4-year B. A. programme in Communication Arts should possess
at least five credits passes at one or two sittings in the NECO and/or WASSCE
examinations. Two of the credits should be in English Language and Literature
in English.
ii) Candidates should also have at
least a P7 in Mathematics.
iii) In addition, they must have
acceptable scores in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
2 Candidates
for Direct Entry admission for the 3-year programme should, in addition to
having the requirements under 1 (i) and (ii) above have:
i) At
least two B level passes at the Advanced level or a National Diploma in mass
Communication or Journalism from institutions approved by the Senate of the
University of Uyo with pass levels not lower than an Upper Credit.
ii) Those
who possess High National Diploma (HND), and degrees in other cognate areas may
also be recommended for admission as direct entry students and into the second
year of the programme.
(C) POSTGRADUATE
DIPLOMA (PGD) IN MASS COMMUNICATION is a Part-time professional development
programme for practicing journalists and other media workers. It builds the
foundation for advanced media/communication research. Admission Requirements:
An applicant for admission to the Post-graduate Diploma in Mass Communication
(PGDMC) programme should be:
(i) A
graduate of the University of Uyo or any other University recognised by the
Senate of the University of Uyo and accredited by the National Universities
Commission.
(ii) A holder of a least a Third Class Honuours degree in
Communication Arts, Mass Communication or Journalism, or
(iii) Media professionals whose first degrees are in
communication-related disciplines but who have no fewer than five years' work
experience in the media, or
(iv) Higher National Diploma holders in Mass Communication from
an accredited Nigerian Institution under the National Board for Technical
Education with at least three years post qualification experience and at least
a lower credit pass.
(D) MASTER
OF ARTS DEGREE (M. A) IN MASS COMMUNICATION. This programme trains graduates to
fit into specific aspects of communication practice, assist them address and
proffer solutions to communication problems in organisations, and allows them
initiate research and work independently on specific projects. Areas of
specialisation include Broadcasting Film, Public Relations and Advertising,
Organsational Communication, and Print Journalism.
Admission Requirements:
A candidate seeking admission into
the M. A. Mass Communication Programme shall be:
(i) A holder of a B. A. degree in
Communication Arts from the University of Uyo with a CGPA of not less than
3.00.
(ii) A holder of a B. A. or B. Sc. in Communication Arts/Mass
Communication from other institution recognised by the Senate of the University
of Uyo with a CGPA of not less than 3.00 in the Five-Point grading System or
2.75 in the Four-Point grading system.
(iii) Shortlisted candidates will be required to participate and
pass the oral and written tests before admission is granted.
(iv) Other requirements are as stipulated for the Masters
programme in the University of Uyo.
(E) DOCTORATE
DEGREE (Ph. D) IN MASS COMMUNICATION is a three-year Full-time programme which
allows scholars to engage in advanced research into ways of improving the
teaching and practice of the media and communication arts. It equally helps
deepen knowledge and understanding of communication and guide scholars to make
original contributions to scholarship in the following specialised areas:
Broadcasting, Public Relations/Advertising, Organisational Communication, Print
Journalism. Admission Requirements: A candidate for admission to the Doctor of
Philsophy (Ph. D) programme in Mass Communication shall be:
(i) A
graduate of the University of Uyo, with a Master of Arts, or Master of
Philosophy (M. Phil) in Communication Arts/Mass Communication.
(ii) A holder of a similar qualification of any other
university recognised by the Senate of the University of Uyo.
(iii) A holder of a good Master of Arts, or Master of Science
(Social Science), Master of Philosophy in Communication Arts, Mass
Communication, Journalism, Public Relations and Advertising.
(iv) Other requirements are as stipulated for Ph. D programmes in
the University of Uyo.
(v) Candidates
for Ph. D will normally be required to pass the oral and written screening
tests before admission is granted.
(vi) A candidate for Ph. D Mass Communication is expected to have
a B average score of 60 percent or a CGPA of 3 on a Five-Point grading system
to qualify for admission.
