PROVOST’S WELCOME!
Welcome to the College
of |Health Sciences (CHS) of the University of Abuja, Abuja, Federal Capital
Territory
Prof. Kareem
AiredeProfessor Kareem K. I. Airede is third Provost of this noble and great
medical School, referred to as the College of Health Sciences (CHS), of the
University of Abuja (UniAbuja). He has been the pioneer Dean, Faculty of
Clinical Sciences as well as the pioneer Deputy Provost (2015-2016), before
being elected and appointed Provost, January 26, 2016.
- PROVOST -
The CHS is sited
centrally in Nigeria, at the Federal Capital Territory, within the University
of Abuja that was established on January 1, 1988 as a dual-mode University with
the mandate to run both conventional and long distance learning programes.
On the other hand, our
noble CHS was established latterly in 2007, and it became the most national
University College in Nigeria.
I am very pleased to
welcome you all to the CHS and its’ now functional website. UniAbuja and the
CHS were initially placed in what was tagged ‘Mini-Campus’, at a further
southern precinct town called Gwagwalada, but has now moved 80% of its work-
and student-force to the permanent site, which is placed nearer the
International airport on the Shehu Musa Yaradua Way, occupying land size of 11,
800 hectares.
The current location of
UniAbuja and part of the CHS, i.e., permanent site, are in a vibrant and
easily-accessible suburb of the Nigerian Federal Capital, which offers
conducive academic environment for students and scholars.
The CHS commenced
academia with one Faculty, namely the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, with a
subsequent addition of 2 more faculties, i.e., namely, the Faculty of Basic
Clinical Sciences and Faculty of Clinical Sciences.
Faculty of Basic
Medical Sciences is primarily located at the permanent site, whilst the Faculty
of Basic Clinical Sciences, shares functions both at the permanent site as well
as the Affiliate Teaching Hospital, located about 20minutes drive away in
Gwagwalada, that is, the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital. Finally, Faculty
of Clinical Sciences is fully based at the Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada.
The former President of
Federal Republic of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, approved the use of
Gwagwalada Specialist Hospital as the Teaching Hospital and directed that a special
working relationship be developed with the National Hospital. However,
following our belief in the benefits of operating a Multi-Teaching Hospital
Complex, the University of Abuja has begun the process of including other
hospitals in the Federal Capital Territory in the Hospital Complex.

BRIEF HISTORY
At it’s of 27th October
2004, the Senate of the University of Abuja approved the creation of four new
academic programmes, which included the CHS. The founding/pioneer Provost was
Professor J.A.M. Otubu, a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, who made a
proposal for the creation of CHS, whilst being Dean of Faculty on 1st October,
2005. He was pioneer Provost from 2007 to 2010, and thereafter, Professor S.A.
Asala acted in that capacity until being elected and appointed as substantive
Provost, August 2014 – January 27, 2016.
COLLEGE STATUTES
A College Statutes
2007, established by virtue of section of the University of Abuja Act 1992 was
evolved. This has been approved by the Senate and Council of the University of
Abuja and had undergone one reading, but yet to be finalised in view of
political changes in government. We are actively pursuing the completion of
these Statutes with its passage into law, hopefully before the 2nd quarter of
2016.
COMMUNITY PRACTICE
The College had located
a Primary Health Center at Dobi in Gwagwalada Area Council of the Federal
Capital Territory. The University of Abuja has now completed all stages of
negotiation with the Council authority, and this PHC, Dobi has been given to
the University for the training of our students. Great thanks must be given to
Hon. Zakari Angulu Dobi of Dobi for the gracious release of the said PHC to us.
OUR VISION AS A COLLEGE
The CHS was established
to provide an array of national, regional and international opportunities for
higher education in medicine, focused and applied research – in an environment
that fosters problem-based learning, discovery, creativity, and community
engagement, and all in line with its Vision. Frankly speaking, CHS’s Vision is
to become a model National Unity Medical School, excelling in medical education
and research.
Tuition and research is
of an internationally benchmarked standard at CHS, where students are exposed
to strategic teaching methodologies, innovative programme design and intensive
research. At CHS, we are committed to developing young men and women for
careers in medicine, science, and preparing them as future leaders, captains of
the medical sector and tourism, researchers and innovators to meet the needs of
an ever-changing world and the challenges time ahead.
My personal vision and
passion for our noble CHS remains in concert with its own vision and peculiar
logo of Solum Optimum (Only the Best), as I want to serve as to be a catalyst
for the transformation of CHS into a model College of global standards; as to
achieve an accolade of being one of the BEST in Nigeria and rest of Africa; and
becoming one of top 200 in the world by 2020.
MISSION
This vision of mine can
be achieved with the use of the following strategy and methodology:
To impart a culture of
EXCELLENCE in the quality of training at all levels by;
Building the capacity of EDUCATORS to be
along 21st century lines;
Improving facilities & infrastructure;
Blending learning approaches; and
Ensure CHS serves & engages society to
enhance economic, social, and cultural well-being.
