WELCOME TO THE
DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH & LITERARY STUDIES
BRIEF HISTORY
The Department was
established in the 1990/1991 session as full blown academic unit. There are two
main programmes available,namely English Language and Literature in English.
These programmes are run at both the undergraduate (B.A. Hons Degree) and at
the
Postgraduate (M.A., Ph.D) levels. In the undergraduate twin programme,
fifty-five courses are offered while in the postgraduate dual programme sixteen
courses are offered.
PHILOSOPHY
The entire programme is
designed in full realization of the complementarity of language and literature.
The programme thus strives at adequately preparing students to meet the
academic challenges of advanced English Language and Literary Studies as well
as cope with the demands of professional callings in such areas as teaching,
research and public service.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
The objectives of the
programme are :-
Give the students good
grounding and effective mastery of the English Language in its various
applications to achieve adequate self expression and self-articulation in the
language. Adequately prepare the students for postgraduate studies in English
Language,Linguistics, Language Education and Literature in English. Produce
graduates who posses an informed literary sensibility and necessary tools to
respond appropriately to any literary stimulus and write creatively.
Equip such graduates
with adequate knowledge of the full range of major landmarks and trends in the
literature in English. And produce graduates who could become competent English
Language and Literature in English teachers.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENT
UNDERGRADUATE
Candidate are expected
to have passed the Senior Secondary
School Certificate or the equivalent with a minimum of five credits at not more
than two sittings. The subjects must include English Language, and Literature
in English. A minimum of Pass in Mathematics is also required
POST GRADUATE
Candidates must have a
minimum of five credits at not more than two sittings, including English
Language and Literature in English. At least, a Pass in Mathematics is also
required.
Candidates must have
graduated from a university with minimum of second class lower degree to be
eligible for admission the Masters (M.A) programme.
Candidates for the
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) programmes must have earned a minimum of 60%
weighted aggregate in the previous masters programme to be eligible. Any
previous masters programme weighted aggregate below 60% but not below 55% makes
candidates only eligible for an M.Phil/Ph.D admission.
