UNIABUJA wins national accounting competition
University of Abuja
(UNIABUJA) has emerged the winner of this year’s edition of the National
Accounting Competition put together by the Nasarawa State University, Keffi.
One of the chief
organizers of the quiz competition and Head of Department (HOD) Banking
and
Finance, Dr Uche Uwaleke, who revealed this at the weekend, said the
competition was designed to encourage students in various universities and
polytechnics to learn new innovation in accounting discipline to conform to
national and international best practices.
UNIABUJA
He explained that panel
of judges arrived at the overall winner through a rigorous academic process
which requires candidates to write on a given topic with specified format
under a schedule which are vetted and assessed by professors drawn from
different specialisations in accountancy.
Uwaleke stressed that
the 2015 edition was won by students from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife,
while, the current 2016 edition had candidates from Nasarawa State University
and University of Benin as first and second runner up respectively as
University of Abuja emerged the overall winner. He added that the first
position took home N250, 000, second person N150, 000 and third position N100,
000.
Some of the activities
that heralded the quiz competition was a paper presentation by the guest
lecturer, Prof. Prince Famous Izedonmi of the University of Benin.
Prof. Izedonmi, who
spoke on the topic: ‘The Role of Accounting Education on Entrepreneurship
Development,’ said 98 per cent of success in any endeavour comes from hard
work.
Earlier, the Vice
Chancellor, Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Prof. Muhammad Mainoma, who was
the chief host, expressed gratitude to the organiser of the competition,
saying the move would go a long way to promoting the teaching of accounting
profession in Nigeria.
