WELCOME TO THE
DEPARTMENT OF PHILOSOPHY & RELIGION
BRIEF HISTORY
The Department of
Philosophy and Religions came into existence in 2005, following the approval by
the Senate of the University of Abuja when Professor Nuhu Yaqub was the Vice
Chancellor of the University. However, it was during the 2006/2007 academic
session that proper academic activities started. Dr. Lawrence O. Ugwuanyi was
the pioneer Head of Department for two terms. The Department is made up of
three Units viz: Christian Religious Studies, Islamic Religious Studies and
Philosophy – all offering degrees (B.A) in their respective areas. The
Department is yet to start postgraduate programmes. Nevertheless, the
Department services, Sociology and Political Science Departments, ASSE,
CDL&CE and GST Unit. In the Christian Religious Unit, there are five
Academic Staff; Islamic Religious Studies Unit has seven, while Philosophy has
five. Four of the staff are of the rank of Senior Lecturer, while one of them
is being assessed for promotion to the rank of Associate Professor.
Majority of the staff
are Lecturer 1. A good number are PhD holders, while others are in their
various levels of their PhD programmes. More details in the profiles of the prospective
staff of the Department. The Department has only one non-academic staff -
Senior Confidential Secretary.
There is a visiting
Professor in the Christian Religious Studies Unit – in the person of Professor
David Tuesday Adamo from Kogi State University, Anyigba. Besides, there are
adjunct staff from ASSE. The Department has so far produced four sets of
undergraduate Students in all the three Units. The department runs a
journal-Abuja Journal of Philosophy and Religions. Its 3rd edition has reached
an advanced stage of production. Of course, the department has its Students’
Handbook which serves as good guide to both staff and students.
The Current Head of
Department is Rev. Samuel Alifa who took over from Dr. Lawrence O. Ugwuanyi in
2011.
The Department is
really growing in all ramifications - staff development, academic, social and
community activities and services.
It is hoped that the
office accommodation as well as lecture halls problems will be solved soon by
Management.
