Uniabuja, NASRDA to Collaborate on Food Security
The University of Abuja
and the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) are to
collaborate towards developing weather early warning system that would guide
agricultural production in the country.
Director General of
NASRDA, Professor Saidu Mohammed, who disclosed this at a joint MoU discussion
session by officials of the University of Abuja and NASRDA at the Main Campus
of the University during the week, said that the collaboration was part of
efforts to boost the country’s food security.

He said the early
warning system when fully developed would predict with high degree of accuracy
farm produce outputs across the country which was desirable for planning
purpose in the nation’s quest for food self-sufficiency.
Professor Mohammed said
that NASRDA in conjunction with the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of
Abuja would work on the early warning system with the country’s farmers as the
main beneficiaries of the technology and national food security as the overall
objective.
The Director General
said that NASRDA was already collaborating on other researches with lecturers
at the University which should place them in positions where they would benefit
from recent developments in space research technology and boost their
capacities to train the trainers on space technology.
Vice-Chancellor of the
University of Abuja, Professor Michael U. Adikwu, said that the joint
discussion session was aimed at fine-tuning agreements signed between the
University, the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology and NASRDA earlier
to facilitate the implementation of the documents for the overall benefit of
the nation.
Professor Adikwu
expressed satisfaction with the pace of cooperation between the University and
NASRDA and thanked the agency for donating some computers to the University and
making its research facilities available for use by both staff and students of
the University.
